Search Engine Marketing: Fifteen Ways to Build Links
Search Engine Marketing November 15th. 2007, 2:18pm
Question: How do you get your website to be listed high on Google’s search rankings without emptying your pockets?
Answer: Link building.
Links from other websites to yours builds credibility with search engines. Google, for example, looks at the credibility of the sites linking to you, or their “page rank.” If websites with a high page rank are linking to you, it in turn builds your reputation and authority.
Some of my favorite link building ideas:

- Write press releases and distribute them through services like PRWeb, PRNewsire, or PRLeap
- Run a survey on your site and then publish the results
- Create “Top Ten…,” “Seven tips for…” content
- Feature an industry expert - they see it as a compliment
- Offer to speak at events
- List yourself on DMOZ
- Advertise yourself on Craigslist
- Create a Myspace/Facebook page for your site
- Put an RSS feed on your site
- Leave a comment on someone’s blog and add a link to your website
- Offer a free ebook or podcast on your site
- Create a blog that relates to your website
- Add <alt> links to pictures on your site so Google Images can find them
- Link to influential bloggers

A great list of tips! Another one that has worked well for me is finding popular forums that relate to your field and becoming a regular contributor to conversations there. This builds a loyal reader base and a great community.
